Naturally expanded perlite
Mineral deposits
As an adjunct
operation to our perlite ore mining operation near Nador in northern
Morocco, we also extract "
naturally expanded perlite"
from an adjacent deposit. The perlite found there shows similar traits as
industrially expanded perlite which is most likely caused by crystal water
escaping due to an external heat source.
Scanning electron
micrographs of this material are identical to those generated
with industrially expanded perlite. The formation process of this local
deposit has not yet been understood.

Applications for naturally expanded perlite
This material is very
suitable as an additive for plant substrates and as a soil improvement agent
for its very porous structure with good water absorption capacity. Dual action
is provided by its water retention capacity and the option to double as a
mineral fertilizer. Ongoing testing has not yet been concluded. Additional
expansion, as it is commonly done in conventional unexpanded perlite, will most
likely not be possible.
