Barite Heavy Spar
Barite, also known as heavy spar, is characterised by its high specific gravity (as pure substance 4.48 g/cm3) as its name implies. When chemically pure, the substance is called barium sulphate (BaSO4) which occurs in nature as a transparent to yellowish, reddish and sometimes even almost black (added quantities of bitumen or sulphides) substance depending on the level of contamination.

Mineral deposit
Through our subsidiary company Thiele Perlite, we are currently running several mines in cooperation with other partners in southern Morocco. They supply highest quality translucent to transparent barite.
Applications for barite
Barite can be used in various ways depending on the level of chemical purity and colour:
- as "Drilling grade spar" for drilling muds in oil and gas drilling
- as „Chemical grade spar“ for the production of barium chemicals
- as „White spare“ as filler and extender for paint, paper, plastics, rubber, brake pads and clutch lining
- as material for radiation protection in heavy concrete
- during the gravity separation process of coal flotation
- as contrast agent in medicine
- as processed material, barite can be used for various other applications, e.g. in the electronic or glass industry
